Contrary to popular belief, the Regional District of Nanaimo does not provide ongoing funding for Nanoose Place operations or maintenance (although they have offered grants for specific purposes). The maintenance and operations of the centre (including 1 part-time staff) are funded by fees paid by the users of the two facilities.
There are actually two buildings run by the Nanoose Bay Activities and Recreation Society (NBARS) - Nanoose Place and the building next door (currently rented by the daycare).
The centre is operated by a non-profit board called Nanoose Bay Activities and Recreation Society (NBARS). All members of this board are volunteers. There is one paid part-time manager. NBARS is a registered Canadian charity #132305749RR0001.
REFRESH THE ROOM 2026
Over the next 20 years, thousands more seniors will be calling Nanoose Bay home.
At Nanoose Place, that means our Seniors’ Room is busier than ever - hosting lunches, games, fitness, tech help, and most importantly, connection.
But this well-loved space needs some care of its own.
We’re raising funds to refresh and renovate the Seniors’ Room so it’s:
✔️ comfortable
✔️ accessible
✔️ welcoming for today’s seniors - and tomorrow’s
When you donate, you’re not just upgrading a room. You’re helping ensure older adults in our community have a place to gather, belong, and stay connected as our population ages.
Together, we can make sure Nanoose Place continues to be a place where seniors feel at home - now and for years to come. Our community is changin - and we’re leaning in 💛
In Summer 2025, the RDN donated $120,000 to replace the septic system. This work has been completed on time and on budget. The seeding of the septic field is ready to grow! Thanks to the individual donors who helped with new office upgrades, painting, and entry doors.
The roof of the main building was replaced thanks to a $120,000 grant in 2024 from the RDN (which also included funding for renovation of the washrooms and upgrading of sound equipment and kitchen appliances), and a generous donation of $21,000 from the Rotary Club of Parksville has enabled the roof of the daycare to be replaced.
The November 2025 donation from 100+ Women Who Care Oceanside will support important facility improvements to help keep Nanoose Place safe, welcoming, and accessible for years to come. These upgrades are part of ongoing efforts to maintain and refresh the building so it continues to serve as a vibrant gathering place for everyone.
“The Board that governs Nanoose Place is deeply grateful to the 100+ Women Who Care Oceanside for their generosity and support,” said the Nanoose Place Board of Directors. “Their contribution helps ensure Nanoose Place can continue to bring people together - to connect, to create, and to care for one another.”
About 100+ Women Who Care Oceanside 100+ Women Who Care Oceanside is a philanthropic group that meets quarterly to support local charities. When 380 women donate $100 each, they raise over $38,000 in an hour - proving the power of collective giving in the Oceanside region. Nov 17, 2025
